Sleightholme Beck - Arkle watershed

The road from Bowes through Gilmonby is rather daunting to drive in snow, but is often skiable in these conditions. The bridle way shown heading south from a small plantation before the cattle grid is not evident on the ground and leads onto Gilmonby Moor which is depressingly featureless and heathery. Further along this road, skiing up through West Plantation and through two gates at the field corner and wall junction south of the sheep pens is an easier way onto the fell.

Out on the fell above Gilmonby, the snow was much better.

It could be fun to ski the Pennine Way either from Sleightholme (360m) if the road is passable, or from the A66 by God's Bridge (320m) to the Tan Hill (525m) for a lunchtime pint.

There are quite a few other tracks high up on the moors around Tan Hill, but the scenery may not be as inspiring as the those bridleways overlooking the valleys to the south.
