Weather forecasts are not necessarily aimed at the potential local skier, so a degree of watching the weather every day and knowing what conditions produce (lying) snow is useful. It's possible to put together a page of handy charts from various sources to monitor every day. A version of one I use has been put on the site, (although it was designed for monitoring sea kayaking weather). The satellite pictures may give a clue as to snow cover - but only when there is no cloud ! There is also a useful weather station at Copley (five miles north of Barnard Castle) which is online, and Ken Cook, who runs it, is intending to put on a snow forecast during the winter. Failing these, try phoning a local pub saying you want a lunchtime drink, is it snowing and what are the roads like ?
Currently, I am providing an experimental Current Snow Conditions page, which will be updated whenever there looks to be a chance of skiing. In 2004/2005, this will not be available from early December to mid-January, as I am out of the area, in a place where snow is very unlikely. Christmas on the beach ...
